the Chunky Bits
“Chunky Bits” is a series of decorative objects created using semi-industrial forging techniques. Each piece begins as a solid lump of steel that is heated and stretched open using large-scale drifts. During this drifting process, the outer layers of the material are exposed to constant heat from the furnace, causing internal stresses that result in surface cracks reminiscent of dried, cracked soil.
These natural fractures, combined with the visible marks of the forging process, give each object a distinctive and textured appearance. Some pieces are further refined through milling or turning to create a striking contrast between the precision of machining and the raw energy of forged metal.
A particularly fascinating aspect of the process emerges when the drifted hole is placed off-center. This causes the force to spread unevenly through the material, producing warped and unpredictable distortions. Currently, the largest drifted opening achieved in this series measures up to 150 mm in diameter.
